Chiang Dao West

Location

This the area west of road no.107, from Chiang Mai to Fang.  It is about 70 kms from Chiang Mai, a drive of around 1,5 hours.

Protected areas

The Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary is located in this area.

Trekking

The trekking is in general harder than in Chiang Dao East. Trails are steeper and there is more forest and less agricultural areas.

We offer an exciting three day trek in this area but the cream of the crop is the hike to the summit of Doi Luang Chiang Dao which can also be done in a two day program. This is really for those who are in good shape. Sunset and sunrise from the summit are really spectacular. Hiking to the top of Doi Luang Chiang Dao is only possible between November 1 and March 1.

More programs in the Chiang Dao West area are under preparation.

This area is not visited too often.

Other activities

On the way to Chiang Dao it is possible to visit elephant camps, make elephant rides and do either bamboo or rubber boat (white water) rafting on the Taeng River (Mae Taeng). It is also possible to combine the trekking here with kayaking on the Ping River, cycling or a zipline adventure.

It also possible to do bamboo rafting on the Taeng River (Mae Taeng) near Muang Khong.

Villages

There are villages of Lisu, Lahu and Karen tribes in this area.

Attractions

This area boasts Doi Luang Chiang Dao and Chiang Dao Cave as well as the fascinating Wat Tham Pha Plong.

Doi Luang Chiang Dao is the third highest mountain of Thailand. The summit is at 2195  metres. The views from the summit are absolutely stunning.

The Chiang Dao Caves penetrate up to 14 kilometres into the mountain. The caves have had a significant presence for the locals for over 1,000 years as is evident by the ancient Shan Chedi near the entrance and the folklore surrounding the Caves. The caves are venerated by the Thai and Shan people as is evidenced by the offerings, statues and decorations present at the entrance and inside. At various locations within the caves are small temples and statues of the Buddha.

The caves are interesting for the experience of being in such a location, the dripping stalactites, and other stalagmite rock formations.

Wat Tham Pha Plong is a temple that was founded by Luang Pu Sim Putthajaro in 1960. It is not far from Chiang Dao Cave. About 500 steps take you to the temple which is located in a cave. Views are amazing and forest very lush.
