A unique program that will let you participate in a treeplanting community project that will offset part of the carbon footprint of your holiday. You will stay in a basic but beautiful bamboo bungalow, the Pure Farm, on the edge of ricefields. You will hike into to the forest with local people, plant your trees and monitor the growth of the Tiger Trail trees. Learn about the forest and its impact on local agriculture. We will also tell you everything you want to know about Asian elephants and their role in tourism. The second night you will stay in a Palong village. Learn about the traditions and culture of this fascinating tribe that just recently arrived in Thailand from Myanmar.

Day 1: Chiang Mai – Pure Farm

Description:
Your trekking guide will pick you up at an appointed time at the hotel. You will drive to the north into the mountains. First we will stop at a local market. Your guide will do some shopping for the coming days. He will take you along and will explain about the different ingredients he will be using for lunch and dinner. Continue to the Don Jiang community. Here you will be received by the villagers. Before lunch you will learn about the treeplanting project in the community forest of Don Jiang. This project is part of “Green Thailand”*. In 2011 villagers from Don Jiang have planted 20000 trees in their community forest to restore the watershed function of the forest. This has really been a community effort. Farmers, schoolchildren and monks participated. You will have the chance to participate as well and offset part of your carbon footprint of your holiday!
Your guide will cook lunch. You can help him is you wish. After lunch you will trek to the community forest of Don Jiang. You will carry your trees in a basket to a designated place where you will plant your trees. You will plant 10 trees each. Besides planting we will also enjoy the hike in the forest and the great views. Staff of Pure Farm will show you how to monitor the growth of trees that were planted by staff of Tiger Trail Thailand in December, 2012.After the planting activity we will hike to a waterfall where we will have a refreshing swim before hiking back to the Pure Farm where we will spend the night. You can assist your guide with cooking dinner.Overnight in the Pure Farm overlooking ricefields and mountains.
Day 2: Pure Farm – Palong village

Your guide will prepare breakfast. Enjoy the sunrise. After breakfast we will leave Don Jiang and drive to Keng Keud in the Mae Taeng valley. The valley is a popular destination because of the abundance of elephant camps. There are no elephants living in the wild in Northern Thailand anymore. We will stop at an elephant camp at Keng Keud. You will observe these huge animals from up close and your guide will explain about the Asian elephant, its threatened status and its role in tourism. An elephant ride is available if you wish (not included in the price).Then we will embark on an exciting whitewater rafting adventure on the Mae Taeng River after which we transfer to a bamboo raft for a short while.We will pass Elephant Nature Park, Mae Taman and Mae Taeng Elephant camps on the way to Chiang Dao. Drive to the start of our trekking.Lunch will be in the jungle. The trail has a few steep hills but most of the trail is relatively easy. All together we walk about 2,5 – 3 hours until we reach our final destination of today, the Palong village Pang Hoo. There are only a handful of Palong villages in Northern Thailand. The Palong tribe only recently moved from Myanmar to Thailand, they wear a distinctive costume mostly in red, with rattan hoops worn around the waist.After arrival in the village you can relax, explore the village or learn some Thai cooking by helping your guide prepare the dinner.He can explain you about the herbs and ingredients he uses. After dinner your guide will take you to one of the village houses where you will meet some of the villagers. Overnight will be in one of the village houses
Day 3: Palong Village – Chiang Mai

After the sounds of nature and the locals woke you up, your guide will prepare breakfast. After breakfast continue trekking about an hour and a half to a Karen village Thakilek. Here our truck is waiting for us. Drive to Chiang Dao and onwards to Wat Tham Pha Plong a remarkable forest temple at the foot of Doi Chiang Dao, the third largest mountain of Thailand. In the shadow of the mountain we climb up the 500 steps to this cave temple. The view is breathtaking. We will have lunch in a local restaurant outside Chiang Dao Cave. After lunch you will explore this fantastic cave complex with your guide.
Drive back to Chiang Mai. Our last stop on the way back will be at one of Chiang Mai’s famous orchid nurseries. We will drop you at your hotel at around 5 pm.
*Green Thailand is a consortium of agroforestry and reforestation community projects in Thailand, developed on the initiative of Pur Projet, in partnership with cooperatives of small-scale organic rice producers, and village communities in Eastern (plateau of Isan) and Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai region).Pure Project is a collective of associated structures which assists organizations/companies in incorporating climate issues into their raison d'être and businesses.This is the first project of its kind in Thailand, applying international carbon certification standards to community forestry activities in Thailand.
