This tour will take you to the charming city of Lampang. The city of Lampang claims to be the leading centre of Lanna culture. It certainly is much older than Chiang Mai and has some of the most beautiful temples of Northern Thailand. In the 19th century Lampang became a centre of teak logging with at least 4,000 elephants working in the area. It has strong Burmese influences due to the Burmese the British logging companies brought with them to work. There are some magnificent historical houses dating back from that period.You will travel to Lampang by local train. You will visit historical sites, ancient temples, local markets, the Lampang Elephant Conservation Centre and the hospital of the Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation.
Please note: Lampang has a weekly evening market on Friday at Wangneua Street and on Saturday and Sunday at Talad Gao Street. Don't miss this when you are there on one of these days.

Day 1: Chiang Mai - Lampang

Your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel at 0830. Transfer to Chiang Mai railwaystation. Board the slow train that departs at 0930. You will pass Saraphi, Lamphun and the Khuntan tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in Thailand. It is a very scenic train ride.At Hang Chat station we will disembark. This will be around noon. Our driver will be waiting for us. He will take us to Wat Prathat Lampang Luang, by many considered the most beautiful temple of Northern Thailand.
We will have lunch at a local restaurant near the temple. After lunch we will drive to Lampang. The city of Lampang claims to be the leading centre of Lanna culture. There are some magnificent historic houses dating back from that period.After arrival we will check into our guesthouse. We will make a walking tour of Talat Gao street with its many historic houses. Your guide will tell you the history of some of the beautiful houses. For dinner we recommend you the Riverside restaurant within walking distance of the guesthouse. Day 2: Lampang – Chiang Mai

Description:
After breakfast we will make a horse cart ride through the streets of Lampang. We will visit the Burmese monastery Wat Si Rong Muang, Wat Prakaeo Don Tao as well as Ban Sao Nak, a unique historic teakwooden house. Then it is time to depart. We will drive back to Chiang Mai. First stop will be the Thung Kwiean market. Next will be Lampang Elephant Conservation Centre. Here you will watch how elephants once were used in the teak logging industry. Lunch will be at the Elephant Conservation Centre. An optional elephant ride is available (not included). Before driving back to Chiang Mai we will also visit the hospital of the Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation. This hospital is located next to the Elephant Conservation Centre. Watch a short but very moving video about Motala, the elephant that lost a leg when it stepped on a landmine. The foundation welcomes donations.After this we will drive back to Chiang Mai. We will make a stop at Wat Pra That Haripunchai, Lamphun’s most famous temple.
Continue to Chiang Mai where we will arrive about 5-6 PM.
