Kaew Mae Pan Nature Trail, Doi Inthanon National Park
This week we checked out the Kaew Mae Pan Nature Trail in Doi Inthanon National Park. The trail starts a couple of kms before the summit. The trail has been there for many years.
Since a couple of years there is a ticket booth where you have to register and hire a local guide. The guidefee is 200 THB. The guides are mostly Hmong tribal men from a nearby village. Our guide was pleasant and knowledgeable.
The Kaew Mae Pan Nature Trail is still a fantastic trail although we really hope the “development” of the trail will stop. At quite a few places concrete blocks disguised as wooden logs have been used to make steps. At some places this is very comfortable, at other places it seems unnecessary and overdone. At several places along the trail there were concrete blocks lying about, waiting to put on the trail. We really hope the trail will be left in its natural state as much as possible.
It is a lovely walk partly through moist evergreen cloud forest and partly along a very steep ridge with fantastic views over Mae Chaem and the Mae Pan river valley. During our walk vision was very limited through cloud cover which was a pity.
It took us about 2 hours to finish the walk but we could easily spend longer studying plants and trees along the trail. There are lots of different ferns, orchids, and epithytes along the trail. In total 21 explanatory signboards are placed along the trail giving good information about this specific type of forest.
Overall a fantastic walk.
