This four-day trek will take you into the mountains of Northern Thailand into an area called Muang Khong. This is an area seldom visited by tourists. In the coming days you will learn about the flora and fauna of the region and about the mountain dwellers who call these foothills of the Himalayas their home. You will learn to about the traditions and life of the various tribes inhabiting this area, the Karen, Lahu and Lisu. And you'll have a chance to come up-close to the majestic elephants and make a jungle tour with them. Relax at a waterfall and enjoy your time in the nature.

Your experienced guide knows this area like the back of his hand and will tell you about the area, the nature and customs and history of the tribe people. He will introduce you to the secrets of Northern Thai cooking and will make sure this trip will be a memorable experience for the rest of your life.

Itinerary: 
Day 1: Back to Basic, Back to Nature

Description: 

Today you will start a four-day trek in an area seldom visited by foreigners.

We will leave between 09.00 - 09.30 from our hotel in Chiang Mai by pick up truck and drive to the north of Chiang Mai. Along the way we stop at Mae Malai Market, drive to Chiang Dao cave and take some time to explore the cave.

Lunch will be at a local restaurant. Afterwards we drive up on the mountain road to Baan Muang Kong and start trekking for 2 hours to Lahu village.

Day 2: Deeper into the Jungle

Description: 

We start the morning with breakfast at the village. This day we will do some serious trekking, about 6 hours along jungle trails. There will be a picnic lunch at a small waterfall and afterwards we continue trekking to another Lisu village.

Day 3: Trekking and elephant riding

Description: 

Following breakfast you should get ready for a challenging trek for 4-5 hours, up and downhill. The trail leads you under the shade of the green trees, through various kinds of tropical fauna.The guide and assistant will treat to a real jungle style lunch.

After lunch we continue to an elephant camp, where you have opportunity to experience riding these amazing animals for 1/1-2 hours through the jungle. While riding the elephants, be careful to hold tight & be aware of overhanging branches. We tread through the jungle on our elephants towards the Karen hill tribe village of Baan Pang Kao Lam for our overnight.

Upon arriving at the village, we can drop our gear in the hilltribe house where we will stay overnight.

Remainder of this day is free to go swimming in the river, fishing, exploring the village, playing football with children or preparing dinner together with your guide. Al our guides are excellent cooks and can teach you a lot about the traditional Thai kitchen. After dinner, around the campfire it's time to share stories with the guide and the local villagers.

Day 4: Spectacular bamboo rafting

Description: 

This morning we start with an early breakfast. We will leave the Karen by their bamboo raft. While going downstream we experience the peaceful river surroundings, accompanied by birdsongs. We make a brief stop at a Lahu village in order to recheck our raft before passing rocks and rapids for 2 hours. By the time we reach the Shan village it’s lunchtime at a local restaurant. This is the end of our nature trek, we will return to Chiang Mai by local truck.

Things to Bring: 
  •  Short sleeve shirts for the day time (bring a spare one, just in case)
  • Long sleeves for the evening (especially in the winter Nov - Feb it can be a bit cold)
  • Shoes with good grip (especially in the raining season from May - Sep)
  • A cap
  • Suncream
  • A small towel
  • Flip flops
  • Sun glasses
  • Your personal toiletries
  • Personal medication
  • Fully charged batteries or even an extra battery for your camera.
  • 1000-1500 Thai Baht per person in small notes (not bigger than 100 Thai Baht). This is for souvenirs, drinks and tips.

If it is necessary to adjust the program we will always make sure that the quality of your holiday experience and your personal safety are safeguarded. You will always see at least two different tribes during this trek; will make an elephant ride, bamboo rafting and overnight in a hilltribe village.
